electrical safety, lightbulbs used for testing, and probability

I have been called back from the grave to respond to a private message on the subject above. Do not send me any more private messages or I will do my best to pursue a legal action against you for harassment. While it is not 0.0000, the likelihood of a light bulb used for test purposes...

    Bathroom Fan Ventilation

Maybe you could put heat tape on the duct but I don't know that anyone does this. For troubleshooting purposes only, you might temporarily put a small lamp, 10 W or so @ 12 V, in the duct or fan housing. At least it will give you some idea of how many BTU/hr you need to stop this problem.

Thanks for your help. Soon I should be able to post a sizing guide that works to some level of accuracy.

    Explain this 3 way

Each insulated wire goes to neutral, hot, a switch or the lamp. The colors will help some but with an incand. bulb, wire labels, an extension cord, clip leads and a DVM you can figure this out. But it's tedious.

Can you help troubleshoot my hot water/high electricity bill issue?

100x20/17.8= 112 % so the tolerance on the hot resistance value for elements is maybe (112 - 100)/2 = +/- 6 %, assuming this small sample size of 4 is representative of all 4500 W elements. Probably the actual tolerance is quite a bit wider than 6 %. Close enough for guvmint wuk! And the...

    kitchen "thru the wall" fan

I just used the same size that was in there before. If the house has gas appliances put in 3 CO detectors. This will give you 99.9999 % reliability, so called six-nines, aircraft level, safety. Get the sensitive kind. "1. Location of the Exhaust Fan and Air Changes Per Hour: Where you...

    Wall outlet exploded!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc_flash Supercolliders take as much power as a town. In 2008 this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider shorted out, melting a half ton of copper extremely quickly. Too bad they didn't get it on video! I doubt anyone was hurt; they probably...

    Wall outlet exploded!

Your mechanical force caused the grounded metal strip that now has a hole in it to move a fraction of an inch and touch a bare hot wire in the box, and for a few milliseconds more than 400 A flowed. You need to find and insulate that wire, perhaps with approved heat shrink tubing. If there...

Wires too short to reach new load center.

You can use your elec. meter and a clock as an ammeter. The formula is about 1/3 of the way into this link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_meter An oven, elec. dryer or water heater may each take 20 A or so. Elec. heat by itself might pull 100 A. But whatever current you draw the...
