Replacing Noritz NRC1111-DVNG 11GPM with Commercial Noritz or Navien

My S2 is aware there is external circulation through a configuration menu, as well as type of circulator: always-on, intelligent, etc. This allows it to survive in a hostile recirculator environment, although it's preferred to set up external recirc correctly with an aquastat. I think they...

Replacing Noritz NRC1111-DVNG 11GPM with Commercial Noritz or Navien

You can't see the stainless pump body in the photo? The venting is a quick install to get hot showers while I wait for the roofer to come out and replace the roof jack to fit the PVC concentric vent. What a bunch of critics

Replacing Noritz NRC1111-DVNG 11GPM with Commercial Noritz or Navien

I see I didn't post photos of my finished Navien NPE-240S2 installation, her are some belated pics. Old Noritz NRC1111-DVNG: And here is the new Navien S2 with dedicated external recirc controlled by home automation. Note the 12-year-old Taco pump and bronze, external check valve are still...

Replacing Noritz NRC1111-DVNG 11GPM with Commercial Noritz or Navien

Bought a Navien NPE-240S2. Mounting and venting now, plumber will come tomorrow to sweat the copper and move the gas pipe an inch or two.

Replacing Noritz NRC1111-DVNG 11GPM with Commercial Noritz or Navien

You're making assumptions about my recirculation setup. It is controlled by home automation and an aquastat. It works perfectly, only running when needed.

Replacing Noritz NRC1111-DVNG 11GPM with Commercial Noritz or Navien

Unfortunate about support not talking to homeowners, Noritz was good about that. I have a recirculation pump and check valve installed external to the water heater, so would want the NPE-240S2 model without recirc.

Replacing Noritz NRC1111-DVNG 11GPM with Commercial Noritz or Navien

The heater only saw softened water with the chloramine removed by a backwashing catalytic carbon filter, and was flushed with vinegar every year. It wasn't negligent maintenance, it was a Noritz problem.

Replacing Noritz NRC1111-DVNG 11GPM with Commercial Noritz or Navien

I have a Noritz NRC1111-DVNG installed in the attic when I re-piped the house in 2012. 10 months ago the lower copper heat exchanger started leaking, so I hired a local tankless specialist to replace it along with the gas manifold and some associated parts provided under warranty by Noritz...

Pressure regulator drop under modest flow

Improving the water hammer issue allowed me to up the pressure a few psi, which seems to be enough that I don't hate it so much. 500XL ain't no $80 dollar pressure regulator, either.

Pressure regulator drop under modest flow

Again, there was no guessing involved on my end. I measured the pressure into the regulator static and under flow, posted above. The pressure drop under flow is solely caused by the regulator, and Zurn cops to this when they state "12-17psi of fall off is normal", as well as when they describe...

Pressure regulator drop under modest flow

The plumbing system is properly secured. The water hammer from one hose bib irrigation valve was still extreme after securing the pipes with the cause remaining elusive. It turns out the 25' long straight run of 3/4" copper formed a resonant column, amplifying the shock wave. Re-orienting the...

Pressure regulator drop under modest flow

I don't just suspect, I measured the pressure regulator "fall off" at 14psi with a reasonable 7gpm flow. Apparently the regulator manufacturer considers this OK. Dropping from 50psi to 36psi is pretty noticeable, but dropping from 55psi to 39psi will be less annoying if the (properly secured)...

Pressure regulator drop under modest flow

Just a quick update on how I'm proceeding with this issue. While there can be no doubt the "fall off" in pressure of this cheap homeowner pressure regulator is a lot (12 - 17 psi is considered acceptable according to statements in their regulator selection guide!), the pipe movement resulting...

Pressure regulator drop under modest flow

Yes, this seems to be optional in many cases, and we know pipes can take a lot more than 50psi. But my plumbing seems to be quieter and better-behaved in the presence of solenoid valves (even with hammer arresters) if the pressure isn't too high. I'm not sure if mine displays max GPM, it may...

Pressure regulator drop under modest flow

"High flow rates and low fall-off are the hallmarks of the Zurn Wilkins 500XL Series." Looks like I've got cheap homeowner crap with the NR3XL. A 1" 500XL series PRV is $220, while the 1-1/2" is more like $650!!

Pressure regulator drop under modest flow

Yeah, take it apart and clean it is the standard response. Which I will do, although it has done this since I first installed it a few months back. I'm just now getting annoyed enough with it to try and do something. I talked to a tech at Zurn and they say it should still operate correctly...

Pressure regulator drop under modest flow

Sorry about my curt response, I'm sure you encounter many people who haven't even considered the basics. In this case, the plumbing is 1" and in excellent condition as confirmed by the pressure readings at the inlet/outlet of the regulator at static and high flow conditions.
