Can you tell if this is a copper pipe? Also is it a sweat fitting or threaded?

I need to replace the valve but am not 100% sure what I have here. The house was built in 1998 if that helps.

Thanks!

Copper pipe with sweat on angle stop. They also sweated on a coupling with a short section of pipe. What is wrong with the valve?

Get a 1/4 turn angle stop, costs only a little more, but very dependable.

Replace it with a new one. You'll need to use some abrasive cloth to clean up the pipe, but HJ's got the idea...you have enough of a stub after cutting off the coupling to install a new valve in its place. Replace the riser with a hose, or you could use tubing again if you want to, but by moving the valve back, what you have will no longer fit.

Here is a link to a compression installed angle stop. There is a video in the link on how to install it:

If you want to rebuild the valve, it is easy to do. You can buy replacement stems or just go buy another angle stop just like the one you have. Unless you special order the valves all except the sweat on valves come with a plastic stem. I do not like the plastic stems so I always use metal stems.

You may only need to replace the washer. This type of valve has two neoprene washers. One seals it when it is all the way closed and the other seals it when it is all the way open.

If you replace the stem you might need a little plumbers lube because it might be tight.

Rebuilding that old value wouldn't be cost effective. Get the 1/4 turn valve and use a compression fit. Shine the hell out of the copper pipe to make sure it's clean and smooth. Emery cloth works best, but regular sandpaper will work too. Add a flex tube that has the SS mesh covering, and you'll be good for years.
