Hello everyone, :)

A family member, just purchased a house that has a water softener, from the previous owner. I tried following instructions in the manual I found online and it seems like something is not set correctly.

I measured the tanks height and width, and according to a chart I found online it says it is 48,000 grain capacity. 10" x 54" 1.50 cu. ft. ( 48,000 grains )

I saw a salt setting on the back of the meter and it appears to be set at 12.

I looked at the city water department website to see what the hardness was and it says it is around 14-19. The water source the house gets is a blend from ground and imported water.
Link to water quality report: https://www.cityoffullerton.com/civicax/filebank/blobdload.aspx?blobid=23204

There are 4 people that live in the house, 2 adults and 2 children. So I set the number of people 4 and aligned it with the number 17 water hardness. I set the gallons wheel towards 0 afterwards, so it would regenerate that night. It appears to have regenerated successfully overnight, and the gallons wheel is now back at the white dot.

I tested the water hardness the next evening, with water hardness test strips and it shows "red", very hard water. So something appears to be set incorrectly, and I am not sure what else it could be?

I suspect this is not a setting problem since the water is hard in less than a day. If that hardness had occured after a few days, then we would suspect a setting.

Did you check the hardness in the morning? I suspect the water was already hard because the softener has a problem.

Can you see how much water is in the brine tank? If so, how high is the water? Is there some salt up to the top of the water? Don't fill the brine tank high with salt right now.

Are you sure the softener is out of bypass?

LOL, someone finally used the old people/hardness dial.... :)

As to why it is hard after regeneration, it could be many things. Does the system have resin in the tank? Are the valve internals intact? Is there a bypass valve open somewhere? Is the salt bridged?

You can turn the valve to the regen position. It takes about 3 hours, but the system will simply go through a full regeneration and you can watch each step. You will notice on the regen handle window, it will go to the brine cycle. The system should draw all of the water out of the salt tank, and the water should get salty to the drain.

Trouble shooting these systems is fairly simple, but is also a multi-step process.

Do you suggest I wait a few days, and check the hardness again, and before I try to change the settings?

I checked the hardness the next evening. So about a full day after I set the settings.

The water currently in the brine tank is a little bit above the salt level ( I will get some pictures later today, and post it ). I put in 3 , 40lb bags as it was completely empty, and there was only water in the brine tank.

The bypass handle is parallel with the water inlet and outlet.

I just went by what the manual suggested to match the number of people to the hardness, :D

I'm not sure how to check if there is resin in the tank or not? The valve internals I have not checked. I don't believe there is a salt bridging problem, since the brine tank was empty with nothing but some water in it, before I filled it up with 3 bags of salt.

I will try to set it to the regen position, and try to monitor to see if the water gets drawn out.

The little pointer is pointing to SERVICE. Good.

That water level seems like a lot. It will be interesting to find if the brine is being drawn out. In some problems, the brine tank gets filled with no draw until the float safety valve limits the water coming in. Normally the float valve should not be setting the limit.

When you added salt, did you wait before initiating the regeneration or did you initiate right away?

It will usually take around 2 hours for the proper salt quantity to be dissolved so if the regeneration was initiated right away, the brine was not likely at the proper strength.

Is the resin tank bare or is there a jacket around it? If it is bare, if you place a work light behind the tank with the room dark, you may be able to see the height of the resin through the tank walls. The correct resin height will be approx 2/3 full.

The little pointer is pointing to SERVICE. Good.

That water level seems like a lot. It will be interesting to find if the brine is being drawn out. In some problems, the brine tank gets filled with no draw until the float safety valve limits the water coming in. Normally the float valve should not be setting the limit.

Can you please tell me if the water level seems ok, by looking at the pictures I took in the link I posted above? Thanks

When I added salt and set the settings. I turned the wheel to nearly 0, so that it would initiate the regeneration that night/morning. I did not do a manual regen.

The resin tank appears to have a stainless steel cover, so I don't think that I would be able to shine a light through it, :(

It looks good to me, and my concerns do not seem to be warranted.

You want to do the manual regeneration and watch the action.

http://waterpurification.pentair.com/Files/KnowledgeBase/ItemDownload/en/5600 Owner's Manual 42447.pdf says
Forcing a Manual Regeneration: To manually regenerate valve, turn the manual regeneration knob clockwise until it reads “REGEN.”
It does continue with this:

NOTE: Unit will regenerate tonight when the gallon capacity reaches zero.
I hope that was just coincidental placement of the note and that it was not related to what came just before.

Good to hear the water level looks ok.

I will try the manual regen tomorrow and see if the water hardness changes a day or two after.
