Take toilet out to snake or use cleanout?

I have a basement with a high ceiling. The cast iron sewer pipe is easy to get to and there is a cleanout plug. However, it's frozen pretty tight on this 100+ year-old house. There is a toilet right above and on the upstream end of the leak and/or blockage. Would it be easier to just take out the toilet and snake down the drain opening rather than muscle the cap off below?
