What's this connection for?

Hello all,

I noticed some seepage right where our well water connects to our cistern,
so I dug around, and this connector (attached) was streaming. I plugged it to stop
the water escaping, but I'm unsure why it suddenly started leaking. I don't remember a plug on this connector when the system was installed a few years ago. What's causing the leak?

Thanks,

Paul

Bear in mind that I'm lacking in experience with this stuff and a real novice, but that does look very much lik the air inlet to a micronizer (see here: http://www.wellwaterproducts.com/products/Waterite-Micronizer.html)

If water is leaking out then I think (again as an amateur) that this may be a sign that the check valve inside has failed, this part here: http://www.wellwaterproducts.com/products/Replacement-Check-Valve-For-Micronizer.html

Bear in mind that I could be very wrong, so I suggest uncovering some more of the crud around the unit and seeing it is is this unit and then the leak is almost certainly the check valve having failed.

Where does the other end of the hose go? That should give a clue as to the purpose. Jeremy expects that is coming from an air pump that blows fine air bubbles through your water to get rid of sulfur smells, radon, or to oxidize iron to particles that can be filtered or settle out of the water.

I think that hose should probably pushed farther onto the barb, even though that is probably not where the leak is coming from. You can put a worm gear type radiator clamp on the hose to keep it connected to the barbed fitting better.

Jeremy,

I think you have it. Now I recall inserting a rubber "clown nose" fitting to the inside of the valve when the well system was installed. It must have failed, because there's no other reason for the water to be coming out the opening. Thank you! I also remember the well tech guy saying the whole micronizer unit was an option, not a necessity. But since I have one, I'll replace the check valve.
