I'm interested in replicating a similar system to Puronics but having the carbon block filter outside of the system. Is there anything like that or does the carbon filter need to be back washed?

Carbon block filters for whole house application... not highly recommended. A simple GAC bed is adequated for whole house chlorine and chemical reduction. I prefer side by side systems, this gives you plenty of contact time for the carbon to do its job adequately, but a simple stacked tank design is also effective.

Link to side by side system and stacked system as well? Might do an upgrade with my current system
