Hi,
I have a basement washing machine and kitchen sink (next to each other) that are vented above the ceiling using a cheater vent. This does not work as I can smell sewer gas when using the washing machine. I cannot see any vent to connect into nearby, except for an upstairs island kitchen sink vent (running above the basement ceiling), only about 10-15 feet away. I think it is a 1 1/2" vent. Can I connect to this?
Thanks

If the pipes are exposed you could take a picture of how the washer and sink are drained and vented now. That might reveal some clues. Do you know where the odor is coming out? All cheater vents/AAV are not the same; some last longer and work better too.

It could be that the piping is not correct or that the AAV has failed to seal. You can connect to a vent on the floor above, but you cannot connect to the island's loop vent.

Without seeing what is there, we can only guess as to the real source of the problem. You should also be aware that front load washers can develop a smell of their own.
