No problem. Just prime and paint and you'll be ok. Costly though. Best choice is engineered hw, which won't warp.
T&G beadboard is pretty expensive.

You CAN use mdf (much cheaper) if you prime/paint it really well and are careful not to get it wet often (don't do it in a kids b-room).

Thanks. I'm being told that it will warp but I did read that if it's primed front and back and then painted it would be ok.

Right. It has to be properly painted and primed. Make sure your vent fan is properly placed and sized and you won't have a moisture prob.

plywood?

What about plywood bead board? Perhaps more stable than the mdf(?) Again, I think I would back prime and seal any joints.

We had wood beadboard in our master bath, but ripped it out. It was stained and not painted. It was there for 20+ years. Nothing wrong with it other than it was ugly in our opinion. No warping or any other defect.

Last house I owned before I transformed into a city dweller was an 1897 farmhouse out in the boonies. The walls and ceilings were beadboard. We moved some things around and had some of the board left over, so we ran a wainscot in the little bathroom out of old beadboard. It was fine for most of the year, but in winter the joints would open up maybe 3/16 between the boards. Looked nice, though, most of the time.
