Florida Power and Light has a nice graphical display of energy usage at your home. You can display it by month, day or even by hour.

This Wednesday you can see change in usage where we got up at about 9 am and made coffee and breakfast plus the pool pump came on at 9 am. You can see the spike at noon where we both took showers.

We did not use any air-conditioning or heating that day as outside temp stayed in the 70s all day, as plotted on the graph.

So basically the pool pump costs about 15 cents/hr and it cost 30 cents to reheat water used for our 2 showers.

Cool feature

Just wondering, what temperature do you have your water heater set on?

145 dF in the tank with a Honeywell AM-1 tempering valve mounted on the tank set to supply 120 dF to the house hot water lines.

I also have a long run between the water heater and the shower. They are on opposite sides of a moderately large home. It takes 1.5 minutes before hot water reaches the shower. That's a lot of waisted hot water

Have you considered putting a ~5 gallon HW heater near the shower, and feeding it's cold-input with the tempered water output of the main HW heater? That would kill the wait time and save the water, at some amount of standby-loss power use. Ninety seconds is quite bit of waiting time!
